So a big item on the agenda for Republicans in Congress is the approval of the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. For those of you that are don't know, it is an oil pipeline that the TransCanada Corporation wants to build that would run from Canada to Montana then through South Dakota where it would run through Native American tribal land (they do not want the pipeline to be built). And then through Nebraska where it would run over a major aquifer. From there it would join an existing pipeline which goes to Texas oil refineries.
Republicans say it will create jobs. I mean this is true, but the jobs it would create are relatively small in number and almost all temporary. And frankly, I think it is laughable to suggest that this the real reason they want the pipeline approved and not that they want to give a gift to the oil industry.
Are there any other reasons it should be built?
As an aside, Republicans are delusional if they think approval for the pipeline is going to happen in the next two years. At least without major concessions (which they are probably unwilling to give). They have enough votes to pass the bill. But President Obama will veto it and they do not have enough votes to overturn his veto. Their only available ploy then will be to attach it to some appropriations bill and hope that Obama doesn't veto it which he will. Boehner and McConnell will then have to take it out or there will be another shutdown - something they desperately want to avoid.
