NZ - Petition to wipe away gay crime

Forgive me for doing two threads. I'm normally lucky to do one.

I found this interesting. Apparently some people still have records of conviction for gay activity in NZ even though it was made legal in '86.

Personally I just find it quite weird (and kind of humorous in a way, because I'm straight and have a silly sense of humour)

I had no idea

Petition to wipe gay sex convictions wins support on Facebook

A petition to have historic sex convictions wiped from gay New Zealanders' records has more supporters than detractors, if the reaction of ONE News Facebook followers is anything to go by.

Sex between men was illegal until 1986, punishable by up to seven years in prison, and many in the gay community say that stigma still hangs over them.

Wellington man Wiremu Demchick has started a petition to have the convictions deleted, with the Justice Minister indicating she's at least willing to listen.

Mr Demchick says wiping records clean will allow "for people still living with the public disgrace brought by conviction to live the last years of their life in a better state than before".

Many on Facebook say it's a good idea, and overdue.
