Learning quantum mechanics

I am listening to 'In Search of Schroedinger's Cat' by John Gribbin (1980s).

At the beginning of Part 3, he says that students learn about quantum mechanics by learning about the uncertainty principle first. I wonder if someone can tell me whether this is still the case today and if not , where do they start?

I really enjoy reading bookslike this because although I do not attempt to understand in any depth, I have read a variety of books over the earsso that I think I have a good general, but very basic, idea.

My older son is reading 'At The Edge of Uncertainty' by Michael Brooks to me . He's working in France at the moment, so he phones me and reads a chapter at a time over the phone! Here again, the content is what I have read about before, and it is interesting to see things from varying points of view. I think a little more gets added to the info stored in my brain and I Hope it's cumulative.:)

Edited to reduce repetition of the word 'things'!
