Respect Religion

As an atheist, I had a discussion a little while ago about how far you have to go in respecting religion. This comes up a lot in the U.S. where there seems to be a popular social convention that people's religion must be respected. I've been wondering how far are you obligated to take this, and I'm not speaking in terms of what is illegal.

For instance, a Jehovah's Witness comes to my door to talk about their beliefs, I feel no obligation to respect them and feel it would be fine to ridicule and criticize anything and everything they say (the reality is a probably wouldn't open the door although one time I opened my door and had a robe on and was naked underneath, they walked away and didn't try to engage me ;)).

However, it gets much fuzzier for me when someone is talking about what I think of as absolutely absurd beliefs but they did not necessarily "invade" my space like a Jehovah's Witness.

One piece of the equation is what constitutes respect. This is the definition on dictionary.com

Quote:

deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment
