In the story of Prophet Jonah we find that in [Quran 21:87] the word "darknesses" or darkness in the plural is used to describe Jonah's situation. How can this be? Why would the author make such a statement and how could the Quran still be "regarded as the finest piece of literature work in the Arabic language"[1], with what seems to have been a an obvious oversight by the books author?
Many translations of the Quran completely disregard the fact that the translation actually states "darknesses" and just translate the text as "darkness" in the singular form. But who are we to try and correct/edit what is believed (by many) to be the literal word of God? It is possible that some translations of the Quran avoid using the word "darknesses" when translating the text into English, due to the fact that the word does not exist in the English language.
But if we actually take the time to examine the story of Jonah in the Quran as it is relayed to us, something quite fascinating, eloquent, even witty emerges. We find that Jonah actually was enveloped within multiple layers of darkness, thus darknesses.

Next question, is darkness something which can be attacked?
