Jusin Bieber shouldn't be 'Sorry'

I most definitely am NOT a fan of Justin Bieber, but he is on the right side in this case.

Storyline: Indy musician Casey Deniel, who goes by "White Hinterland" is suing Bieber and co-writer Skrillex for supposedly stealing her riff from her song "Ring the Bell" and using it in their song, "Sorry" which is a mega-hit and has over a billion views on utube.

As a three decade plus musician who has written countless songs and done countless covers, I am sick of these self-righteous types claiming they are suing to defend their 'artistic integrity' blah blah...

Listening to the two melodic lines, there are some obvious similarities, but also big differences (for one thing, Bieber uses 4 notes to Deniel's five) and it isn't really clear whether it is a direct sample or not. Skrillex supposedly went on Facebook and demonstrated how they created the sounds (not by sampling them off her song...) I haven't watched that video yet.

Even assuming they got the idea from her song, I don't think this is what copyright law is designed to protect against. There is not much originality in music; virtually all riffs and progressions, melodies etc have been used somewhere by someone else in time. You can't really copyright a riff--it would be like claiming you came up with the 1-4-5 progression.

Here's the two songs, judge for yourself:
