Of course there is more to it then that.

My first thought was something doesn't make sense here. I don't normally make a grilled cheese sandwich with peanut butter, and I wouldn't expect a restaurant to serve one like that. This family states they specifically stated on the order that their child has a peanut allergy, but that the sandwich they received had a dollop of peanut butter on it.
Is this a case of the parents not knowing what might be on the sandwich so they tried to make sure it doesn't contain peanuts? Panera claims that there was a misunderstanding due to a "language issue", which is plausible if the person making the order sees "peanut butter" but doesn't understand what the parents are really asking.
So why make a note of it if you wouldn't expect a grilled cheese to have peanut butter on it in the first place? The answer I think is at the bottom of the article, where it is claimed this is not the first time this has happened with Panera, indicating that they commonly do put peanut butter on a grilled cheese.

The complaint also notes a similar incident at the Wayland Panera, in which another allergic child received a grilled cheese that contained peanut butter, resulting in a anaphylactic reaction that required hospitalization. Both the Wayland and Natick locations are owned by the Newton-based PR Restaurants. |
