Oklahoma attempts to ban abortion.

In a further attempt to impose their will on women, a bill has passed through the Oklahoma legislature (59-9) and Senate (33-12) attempts to criminalise the performing of an abortion; the law would send doctors to jail for up to three years if they perform an abortion, even in the case of rape or incest.

Yay.

Of course it's posturing in an election year mixed with an attempt to get the case to the US Supreme Court rather than anything remotely productive. Like deal with the state's US$1.3B budget shortfall.

I believe the best descriptions of the bill are by Senator Ervin Yen (a Republican BTW), the only physician in the Senate, who described the measure as "insane" and voted against it, and by (Democrat) Senator John Sparks:
Quote:

Republicans don't have an answer for their failed education policies, failing health care policies and failing fiscal policies, so what do you do in that situation? You come up with an emotional distraction. That's what this bill is.
