Question about black holes and stretching time infinitely at the event horizon

So, I'm watching one of those Universe shows on the Science Channel and they described the hypothetical space probe reaching the event horizon (ignoring of course it would be destroyed). They asserted that from an outside observer the probe would appear to stop because relative to the observer time would stop.

So how could we ever see anything falling into the hole? Or for that matter how could anything ever reach the horizon given relative time would stop?
