Change in momentum/acceleration

Ok, this has been ignored elsewhere.
I have been a dynamicist all my career. I am a PE, Mechanical Engineering, since 1994. I have had a hand in many STS payloads, Titan payloads, ground vehicles and aircraft, from analysis to modal and static testing to durability and functional testing.
The scenario is a dropped mass, m.

During its fall, it comes in contact with barriers whose ultimate strength is less than the dynamic load imparted by the falling mass.
The contention is that there Is a reduction in [b] acceleration[\b], but not in velocity
I want to know how the hells that is possible. Let's see, mathematically, how d (mv)/dt changes without a change in v.
