What if you could cast your vote against a candidate?

In most election systems you get one vote and you can cast it for any candidate, but you can't vote against a certain candidate except by voting for their opponent (or one of their opponents if there are three or more candidates).

The recent Republican primary process gave me this idea: You still only get one person, one vote, but you can use your vote to vote against a particular candidate if you so choose, and all votes cast against a candidate are subtracted from the total votes cast for that candidate.

Is there anything wrong with this idea?

In a two-person race it would be kind of irrelevant but if there are three or more viable candidates then it could be an option that better expresses the voter's intention in some cases than voting for one of the other candidates.
