Astronomy professor Geoff Marcy implicated in multiple sexual harassment violations

Complaints from a number of women led to a six-month long Title IX sexual harassment investigation again Geoffrey Marcy, an astronomy professor at UC Berkeley. The investigation concluded - in July - that Marcy was in violation of the CRA. At that time, according to the current faculty provost, UC issued Marcy a warning that further violations could result in consequences possibly including termination.

Nobody, however, was aware of this. Nobody in the Astronomy department, nor Marcy's students, nor any of the original complainants was informed that the investigation had ended, or what it had concluded, or that Marcy had been placed under any supposed special behavioral conditions. After the investigation's conclusion was given to the university, Marcy continued his normal schedule and routine, chairing events and serving on organizing boards of various functions as usual. It was a surprise when somebody leaked the results of the investigation to Buzzfeed, who publicized them late this week. Nobody knew about the complete lack of any UC response to the investigation's results save for the warning to Marcy to stop misbehaving, until one of the original complainants - reacting to the Buzzfeed story - wrote the university and asked for details, whereupon the faculty provost wrote a letter mentioning the warning.

While the report itself was surprising, the behavior described in the investigation was not. Professor Marcy was the kind of person where if you were a woman attending an astronomy convention or meeting, other women who had suffered harassment at his hands would try to warn you to stay away from him.
