Vortex Bladeless Wind Turbine

Hype? Scam? Game Changing Technology?

Just heard about these:

I first saw them at wired.com. Knowing that wired was cool, but frequently hyped, I found the company's web site, and the above article from Forbes.

For those not wishing to click, it's a new kind of wind turbine that doesn't have a blade. It's just a stick. According to the wired article, they are 30% less efficient than common wind turbines, but you can put twice as many in one spot. They are noiseless (or at least low noise), they don't kill birds, and in my opinion they don't look as ugly. Also, they can come in very small sizes. The company's first product will be a 1 meter tall turbine that generates 100 watts, coming soon to a third world neighborhood a long way from yours.

If all of that is really true, this is really big.

But......the Next Big Thing sometimes doesn't turn out to match the hype. Anyone know anything more about these?
