School Board Upholds Suspension for Boy Over Long Hair

Quote:

Ashton Bodiford, 11, has missed more than 40 days of school since being told March 5 that he could not return to J.B. Nachman Elementary in Alexandria until he cut his hair to meet policy — no longer than chin length in the back or 3 inches on top for male students.

Okay I'm from the South and I when I was very young I sorta caught the very tail end of the period when long hair was an actual like legit major social issue so I'm sorta vaguely aware that this did used to be a "thing" but I sorta thought it had ran its course by now.

Several things just bug me about this. Yeah on the most basic and obvious level this is just an incredibly stupid rule. The very idea of a public school in 2015 taking issue with a child's hair length is just inane. This would have seemed trite if it was the B-plot to a 1950s Sitcom.

Secondly this quote from one of the members of the school board in question:

"I think it instills discipline, fosters respect for authority and promotes a positive learning environment,"

WTF? Okay first point and the last point are just nonsensical educational buzzwords but that middle point... how does suspending a child for having hair too long "foster respect for authority?" No it makes "the authority" seem batcrap insane.

Thirdly their excuse which basically is them trying to sell "Oh you see we don't necessarily agree with this rule (even though the previous statement sorta implies that you do but whatever) but it's is on the books and... gosh darn-it wouldn't you know it's just so hard to change the rule." Apparently the only way they can change a rule on hair length is to meet beneath a full moon on the 3rd Friday of the first month of the harvest when a comet's in the sky...

And lastly why how is any of these Constitutional? I mean can a school district use the magical buzzwords of "Learning environment" and "good order and discipline" and micromanage a students hairstyle?
