Quantum Jitters in DNA

A team from Duke University have managed to observe a DNA base making a slight - and they do mean slight - change that results in that base temporarily imitating a different base. This change, according to the team, occurs at the same rate that DNA makes 'mistakes' in copying suggesting that the change in question (which involves moving or losing a single atom) might be a key element in mutation.

A most fascinating article.
