If Mars had not lost much of its water would it have an appreciable land mass?

I read where if Mars is ever terraformed half of the planet would be covered with water. Ok since Mars is supposed to have lost most of its water was there any land mass there before whatever happen happened?



It seems to me that Mars losing much of its water is a good thing if humans are ever to live there.
