Paris gun attacks - the wider context

This thread, which I am opening in social issues and current affairs rather than non US politics, is for discussion of the wider context of the Paris gun attacks, such discussion having been nipped in the bud by the forum's army of nits and thought police who report 'off topic' posts because they express the contrary opinions of other posters. As mine seems to be a minority viewpoint, and thus more than usually exposed to such sniping, I get more than my share of this nonsense so I thought I would try another tack.

All opinions, so long as vaguely related to the latest round of terrorism in Paris, are on topic in this thread. From 'nuke the bastards!' to 'let's all sign up with ISIS today!' and anything in between is OK with me.

My own position is that the moral standing of the terrorists and the west are at least equivalent but, if anything, favourable to the former. Of course, the incidents are intrinsically tragic and sad and it was terrible to see the poor guy they executed in the street. I likewise feel sorry for the terrorists and wish I could hear their story. I consider them brave, idealistic young people fighting for their beliefs.

I also think religion has nothing, or next to nothing, to do with the conflict between Islam and the west. We are encouraged to think of it in those terms because that explanation for these events suits the trouble makers and war mongers (the military-industrial complex, bankers, oil companies, political elites and relevant organs of the state). Unsurprisingly, this viewpoint finds a ready audience on an atheists' forum of the politically unsophisticated.

We cannot win the 'war on terror' as it is currently being fought. If 'winning' means no more terrorism and our methods of achieving that involve only catching and killing terrorists, so-called 'intelligence' and firing drones at training camps then basically forget it. Nor can we win by killing all the Muslims, nuking them or expelling immigrant populations from Europe en masse (yet such drivel is freely expressed here with scarcely any reaction).

Equally, we can't lose the war either and, for all I know, the interests of the said military-industrial complex et al may best be served by it going on for ever, as it shows every sign of doing. For those that disagree, post your war-winning strategies here!

I don't know enough to offer an all-encompassing solution. I suspect it would involve a major shift in Middle East policy of some kind. Assuredly, what we have been doing up to now has not been productive.

Trustbutverify - please explain in what way my position is 'self-serving' hopefully without twisting the meaning of that expression out of shape. As for whether my views are 'warped', well, that's a matter of opinion. I obviously disagree.
