Let's talk about Chromebooks

I bought a Toshiba Chromebook 2 today.

It's a relatively high end device (although some of what I was reading about was apparently a model not yet available in Australia - the real high end version has 4GB RAM and 1080p display, mine has 2GB and 1366x768).

My thinking around the purchase was that it will be good for uni, it's super light and portable, has 10 hours of battery life and I do most of my work on Google Docs anyway. So far so good, I think it will meet all of my needs in that respect and for $400 it's still a pretty good deal.

Some disappointing aspects though. The internal storage is only 16GB, a pitifully small amount, but I figured I could at least use an external drive and save torrents directly onto it . However, the media player is extremely limited, it will only play very generic file formats - even something like MP4 will only work if the sound is encoded as MP3. A suggested workaround is storing files on Google Drive, which sounds good in theory but the length of time it takes to upload a few hundred MB is just ridiculous. Even streaming is a painful experience, which seems a little ludicrous since the whole raison d'etre of the platform is to be an internet only system. I tried watching a doco from SBS On Demand (a catch-up TV service in Australia) which took ages to load and unless I was playing the video on the lowest possible playback quality it kept buffering every few seconds. My internet speeds are fine, can get the usual 2MB/s, so am assuming it's a memory issue - making me wish I'd waited for the 4GB RAM version. I haven't tried anything much on YouTube yet (it being the platform Google seems intent on driving you to) but I have literally watched ALL the docos on YouTube so am bereft of anything to watch. If my porn streaming service doesn't work I'm going to be mightily upset! :p

So not really much of a media device, which is a shame because the thing that tipped me over the edge to buying a new rig was having stepped on my Windows machine and fracturing the screen - I'm going to have to keep on watching stuff on that and keep the CB for real work.

Has anyone else had much experience with the CB?
