Anthropocene - how will it unfold

Let's assume a 3-4 degree C rise in global average temps by 2100 which means higher in the Northern Latitudes - perhaps 6-9 C.

Set aside stopping it ....we won't

What do you see as the most profound affects both in your locale and for the most affected regions.....how would you suggest coping...for instance if you were the Mayor of New York, or Miami or London or Venice??

If you were a farmer in the mid-west where wheat is no longer viable.

A would be wine maker in Scotland??

Off the cuff or detailed....this is not an if thread but a when it gets warmer....what will happen and what should be done to cope. We know now that weather extremes are a "feature"

some are on the leading edge already

Early climate adapters show warming world how to cope

02 April 2014 by Catherine Brahic

We still cannot predict exactly how climate change will affect each part of the world, but the people on the front lines are showing others how to adapt

IT IS hard to prepare for a disaster, but harder still to prepare for a disaster that you can't identify. Yet that is the quandary facing many nations, which still don't know how climate change will affect them – even though it is already happening. That means many communities must prepare for the unknown.

We are running out of time to gather scientific evidence, says Koko Warner of the United Nations University (UNU) in Bonn, Germany. It is clear that climate change is happening, driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases, and its impacts will be felt around the world. But it has proved difficult to predict how events like floods and droughts will change in specific areas over the coming decades.

here is a kick off article.

Post up relevant science or even pop-science based articles that are decently researched on how this next 90 years will play out.

There have been quite a few sci-fi novels that make the assumption of a much warmed world.

One of my favs was Mother of All Storms and quite prescient for a novel almost 2 decades old....it's a good read.

And this novel asked knowledgeable people around the world a similar question.

A book that uses this narrative approach is 2084: An Oral History of the Great Warming. The book is written by James Powell, scientist and teacher of geology (who has actually had an asteroid named for him).

2084 is a collection of personal accounts from victims of climate change, set 73 years into the future. What Powell does is take what the science is currently telling us about future climate impacts and translate them into real life, tangible human impacts, told as raw, visceral stories. He's taken peer-reviewed science and humanised it.

Even tho GF is a medical researcher and well aware of what is going on....the thought experiments in the book really brought it home.

For those not familiar with the term Anthropocene.

It's coined from the idea that we are now in a climate regime driven by humans and exiting the rather benign Holocene inter-glacial where humanity developed its civilization.

The Anthropocene is likely to see the fulfillment of "interesting times"> :boggled:

What are your thoughts on those "times" to come ....coming.....only too quickly.

This thread assumes it is getting warmer and will continue to do so....take any dismissal of that it elsewhere - there are threads for that. http://ift.tt/1g55lyX
