I've seen several explanations on how this happens. One is that the beads are actually rebounding off the beads below them.
Another explanation was offered by Mythbusters that this actually just inertia. Once the beads start elevating they want to continue to do so. They offered up an experiment where larger beads exacerbated the fountain as evidence in their favor.
Does anyone have any alternate ideas on this?
