US trashes unwanted gear in Afghanistan to be sold as scrap

The idea is to bring back useful and sensitive things to the U.S., or to transfer such things to the Afghan military. Then, as for things not necessary to return to the U.S. and not needed by the Afghan military, destroy anything left behind that could otherwise be useful for the enemy.

The practice is to destroy everything left behind and not needed by the Afghan military apparently with no regard as to whether or not the things could be used by the enemy. Completely. Vehicles are so shredded that they are only good as scrap metal, not for spare parts. Tents are shredded. Even exercise equipment gets destroyed.

Quote:

Not so long ago, U.S. forces discovered two Humvees that had found their way into enemy hands. They had been refitted and packed with explosives. U.S. troops destroyed the vehicles, and the incident reinforced a policy of trashing equipment.

But Afghan scrap yard owners and dozens of others who sifted through the junk in the yards wondered what dangers could have been posed by a treadmill that was torn apart, the long lengths of fire hose that were cut to pieces, or the bags once used to create large sand-barrier walls with their powerful mesh fabric now sliced and useless.

Dozens of tents cut and sliced sat in piles on the floor. Nearby were fuel bags and gutted generators,
Seems heavy handed and unnecessary.

Greatest of Sun Journalist's, John Kay - dead

From the Sun's obituary before they modified it slightly

Quote:

After university in Durham he became a reporter on the Newcastle Journal before joining The Sun in 1973, covering industry. He later switched to news and in 1990 became Chief Reporter.

John wore immaculate tailored suits after being sent home to change on his first day at The Sun for wearing a sports jacket.

He always carried a neatly ironed handkerchief, which he used to dry the apple he washed with bottled water and ate every morning before phoning his father Ernest in Cambridge.

Yes there was something else that happened between 1973 and 1990. He strangled and drowned his wife and got off on the grounds of diminished responsibility

Still, the domestic violence leading murder, and his habit of inventing stories, and his apparent ignorance of the fact that it's illegal to pay public servants for stories were just forgotten by those who shared his values at the Sun

Oh, I get that and agree. I thought you were talking only about redistricting within a state.

More stupid involving animals in China

Three leopards escaped a safari park in one of China's biggest cities. It took staff a week to sound the alarm.

Quote:

A leopard remains on the loose near one of China's biggest cities after three of the big cats escaped a zoo over the busy May Day holiday.

Residents living near the Hangzhou Safari Park, which did not inform the public for a week that the leopards had escaped, spotted the wild cats last week and alerted authorities, according to an announcement from the Fuyang District government.

Surveillance footage posted online showed one of the leopards walking near the upscale Jinyuan Villa area east of the park on Friday.

Search teams were dispatched, and two of the leopards were recovered, the local government said in a statement.
Quote:

It was not until the search was already underway, and seven days since the animals were reportedly first spotted, that the park officially notified the public. According to state-backed The Paper, park staff had initially denied reports any leopards had escaped.

In a statement Saturday, the zoo said it was "sincerely sorry" for not alerting people sooner, adding: "We were worried that the announcement of the incident would cause panic." The statement said administrators felt as the leopards were all juveniles, there was little risk, but added it was a mistake and "we sincerely accept the criticism" made by the public.
WTF??? But letting them wander around without telling anyone would be just fine? ******* morons!

Computer fandom

I made the rookie mistake of replacing two of my computer's fans with much quieter ones. This is a problem because now all I hear is the other two fans, which I wouldn't have said were loud before now. They were whisper-quiet compared to the other two, yet now they seem to be roaring like jet planes.

The lesson is: replace all your fans at the same time. The new pair doesn't come until Thursday. I may need to employ earplugs until then.

Covid: Dracula's castle in Romania offers tourists vaccine

"Visitors to Dracula's castle are being jabbed with needles rather than fangs after a Covid-19 vaccine centre has been set up at the Transylvanian site."

Bit of vax cred to get done there.

Vaccine tourism, anyone?

Wind on Mars

A nonsense thread caused me to trip over a minor bit of new information that is of interest (and real). We have some information that the sand dunes on Mars are moving due to wind. It had been thought that wind on Mars might only be sufficient to stir dust. Not sure this will lead to a lot of conversation but didn't want to post in the nonsense thread.
