Anybody still using an older XP computer?

I have two older laptops to try to rescue. Both are WinXP era and the Dell I was able to power up is 512GB ram. The Gateway still needs a power supply to be found.

Are they still able to keep pace on the forums and minor occasional web search stuff? Not looking at gaming or FB type social media.

I am not into them with money yet so information is useful. The plan is if one or both are repairable they will get Linux to avoid MS messing with what can work.

Is where tech questions go? I have one.

A month, maybe a couple months ago lightning struck a tree nearby and knocked down a live power line. There was a small fire, and our power went off and on, off and on repeatedly for a good 10 minutes. Then it was out until they fixed the line.

When this was happening I unplugged everything that was easy to unplug. But I didn't unplug the stereo/radio/CD player thingy.

When the power came back on everything seemed fine. No circuits were tripped and I have a number of GFIs at the receptacle, none of those tripped.

But when I turn off the radio that has the cd player thingy, it goes off just fine but a few seconds later the CD player turns itself back on. I tried a number of things except for unplugging it and plugging it back in because the plug is hard to reach.

So I've been ignoring it. Meh. I'll deal with it later.

Fast forward a month or so and I'm upstairs where there is another radio/CD player thingy, (one of them is years newer but I can't remember which one), completely different brand, when I notice the CD player is on. So I turn it off. It goes off, says 'goodbye' and shuts down. Then a few seconds later it turns itself on. It's also hard to reach where it plugs in so I didn't unplug it during the power frenzy.

Both of them have remotes if that's relevant. One is on the older wiring* in the house with the GFI, and the other is on the newer half of the house with newer wiring.

*When the house was remodeled the wiring in the crawl space/attic was all redone but they didn't rewire the individual lines down the walls to light switches and outlets.

Any ideas what possible things are I might investigate? What causes this mysterious behavior? It's so odd that it happened the same way to two different devices.

Fox News host calls for "immigrant replacements"

https://www.thedailybeast.com/judge-...-theory-on-fox

Greg Gutfeld seems to think most of the immigrants from Latin America will become flag-waving patriots. Patriots who oppose abortion, transgender persons, and are good strong family people.

He says he wants these immigrants to come in and "replace" the woke white Progressives graduating from our colleges.

Judge Jennine Pero, doesn't like it one bit. :)

Georgia Guidestones blown up

Local news outlets are reporting that a portion of the Georgia Guidestones monument was destroyed by an explosion this morning. Nearby residents reported hearing a blast at around 4AM. It's not known whether anyone has been seen, or whether police have any suspects (or are even interested in investigating).

The Georgia Guidestones are a vanity art project built pseudonymously in the 1980's on private property which was then donated to the caretaking of Elbert County, who maintain the site as a minor roadside tourist attraction. The monument presents itself as a set of instructions, carved in multiple languages, for the surviving remnants on rebuilding society if most of humanity is ever destroyed in some unforeseen global catastrophe. Some of the instructions suggest population control, eugenicist leanings, and a "world court", and for these reasons (primarily the last one) the monument is viewed with suspicion by right-wing extremists and mainstream conspiracy theorists alike who believe it is part of a Satanic globalist plot.

The Guidestones were mostly recently in the news this past spring when Georgia GOP gubernatorial candidate Kandiss Taylor (who would eventually lose the primary election) pledged as a cornerstone of her campaign to - if she was elected - issue a day-one executive order to "stand up to the Satanic cabal" by demolishing the monument.

DeSantis signs bill requiring FL students, professors to register political view

https://www.salon.com/2021/06/23/des...ws-with-state/

Quote:

Public universities in Florida will be required to survey both faculty and students on their political beliefs and viewpoints, with the institutions at risk of losing their funding if the responses are not satisfactory to the state's Republican-led legislature.

The unprecedented project, which was tucked into a law signed Tuesday by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, is part of a long-running, nationwide right-wing push to promote "intellectual diversity" on campuses — though worries over a lack of details on the survey's privacy protections, and questions over what the results may ultimately be used for, hover over the venture.

Based on the bill's language, survey responses will not necessarily be anonymous — sparking worries among many professors and other university staff that they may be targeted, held back in their careers or even fired for their beliefs.

According to the bill's sponsor, state Sen. Ray Rodrigues, faculty will not be promoted or fired based on their responses, but, as The Tampa Bay Times reported Tuesday, the bill itself does not back up those claims.

The "Silent Majority."

One of the biggest hurdles in discussing American politics (and I'm assuming some version of something like this pops up in other countries as well and I'd welcome non-American's input on that) is the fact that most Americans are not politically active.

There are roughly 252,274,000 Americans of voting age.

In 2020 Presidential Election 158,397,726 votes were cast. So that's about 65% of potential voters actually voting in what was a very stakes, high profile, high passion national election.

Our two big parties; the Democratic and Republican Parties have ~47,000,000 and ~35,000,000 members respectfully. Add on the minor parties that are at least big enough to matter; the Green, the Libertarian, and a smattering of others and you have about 85-90 million people give or take who are a member of a political party. So only about 55-60% of Americans who are politically active are members of an organized political party.

That is sorta as far as we can take raw numbers. Now of those ~90 million people how many are, for lack of a better term, passionate about their parties? How many are protesting and marching and campaigning and volunteering and arguing on social media and voting party lines and voting in primaries and... like active and involved in all of it beyond just voting in the big elections and maybe putting up a yard sign if they are feeling particularly saucy? You can't really put an exact number on that but I feel pretty comfortable saying "not most." Or at least not most people consistently. Obviously "passion" (again for lack of a better, more precise term) ebbs and flows.

My point is of the ~252,000,000 voting age Americans... most are not political in the sense that they aren't "on the ground, fighting the fight" if that makes sense. I've used the term disparagingly before but I'll use it here in a slightly more neutral sense, most American don't belong to a political fandom.

A large percentage of Americans don't vote. A large percentage of Americans who vote aren't a member of either of the two major parties even when they vote for the candidate of said party. And a lot of members of the political parties are not super-passionate about it.

BUT the passionate members of the parties are where all the political discourse happens. And yeah I know that sort of "Duh" level obvious, that's what "interest in" means and all, but they are never above speaking for everyone in their party or, to get to the crux of this discussion, everyone who's not in the discussion at all.

I assume some version of this has always and will always be the way it is, but starting with the Republican Party in the late and really coming to force in the early 80s with Reagan the "Silent Majority" became basically a stealth 3rd person demographic in politics, this whole idea that there is this massive hidden group of Americans who don't have a voice or who are afraid to speak out or some other variation that one of the two major political parties has special insight into and declare themselves the right to speak on their behalf.

To use a crude but funny metaphor it's like watching New York and Chicago fight over whether thin crust or deep dish is the better pizza or whether the only allowed topping for a hot dog is mustard, sauerkraut, and onions or a poppy seed bun, relish, onion, tomato spears, and celery salt when there's the rest of the entire country eating both generic AND countless other variations of Pizza and Hot Dogs that have nothing to do with their argument.

Now sure this largely just political posturing, that one guy trying to win the internet discussion by claiming all the lurkers secretly agree with him and he has special insight into that writ large, but I'm more interested in this group of "Political Lurkers" so to speak itself.

It's easy, too easy, to just chock it up to general malaise or disinterest or laziness and sure those are all in there but I don't know if I buy that's THE major factor since a good chunk of people who aren't party still vote and a good chunk of non-passionate party members are still in a party and so forth and so on the trend seems to people who are not the visible way of being in politics still find a way of being in politics so I'm not buying that everyone who isn't arguing on Twitter or marching is just "not interesting in politics."

I wonder if sometimes it is like the inverse of a one issue voter? Someone who has a stance that overrides all other stances but is not compatible with either party, even they agree with one or both of the major parties on multiple other issues.

There's also the whole thing that "politics" is such a dirty concept in America with so many people just being sick of the whole thing.

I don't have a specific singular direct question here, I'm rambling and throwing something out for discussion. I'm not really looking for a bunch of hot takes as to what everyone thinks the "Silent Majority" thinks because spoiler alert it's gonna be "Well of course they agree with me and we'll win if they ever rise up!"

And yeah I know that on Poly-sci Political Game Theory 101 level the reason really is nothing more than "We have first past the post two party system and this is an inevitable outcome of same."

I'm more just interested in is there a problem to be solved here? Is there really a Silent Majority that exists beyond "Uncategorizable people who don't fit into either two parties."

Is there a combination of political issues that someone could campaign on that a good sizable chunk of American who aren't in politics now would go "Holy crap this guy really speaks for me?"

Is there a way to get meaningful political data from people who aren't party active?

The God Paradox

Every time I sit on the dunny to unburden myself, I contemplate the issue of God and gods… and by the time I am finished cleaning away the remnants, I am yet again irrefragably convinced that the whole delusion is a failure of human reasoning and a testament to our inability to fathom the extent of turpitude that any such creator would ineluctably have to have, given that it created reality the way it is.
God concepts + reality ==> Paradoxical conclusions ==> either reality is a delusion or God concepts are false... but... if reality is a delusion then so are any god concepts... ergo... god concepts are a falsity... QED!!!

The mere fact that we need to kill things and ingest them to be able to perpetuate our desultory existence as creatures, is a testament to either… the utter inept incompetent imbecility of this creator (I3D)… or … if it intended it this way… abject villainy of this tinkerer and sordid SADISM of this execrable intentional creator of misery and suffering.

But it gets even more wicked; if indeed there is an Imbecilic Designer (ID), then we were designed biologically incomplete — we cannot biologically internally auto-manufacture all the necessary amino acids needed for our existence (we are biologically less complete than bacteria) — consequently, we need to devour the cells of other creatures instead of, say, sunbathing for a few hours a day while just mouthing handfuls of clay. Thus, we have to kill other creatures (fauna and flora) and rob them of their amino acids and cellular materials to complete the manufacturing of our own cells.

But the grotesque schadenfreude does not end here… our digestive systems are not even close to being efficient, therefore a big percentage of the butchered creatures we ingest just pass through our tracts inefficiently utilized and go to waste… hence our killing sprees have to be carried out more frequently than would have otherwise been necessary.

This of course results in all sorts of strife and misery and mayhem as a result of our continuous strive for procuring more and more cells, bloodily wrenched off of their original owners. But even more egregiously, we often have to splatter the cells of other humans while competing with them for control over the sources of cells to ravish (whether for consumption or coition).

But the appalling depravity does not end there… the waste matter that results from our interminable thievery of other creatures’ cells, KILLS US by resulting in all sorts of internal diseases and failures of the digestive system itself. Furthermore, the waste matter eventually percolating through the water systems and habitations results in external diseases and plagues and all but endless suffering and torment.

So as you can see, on the stage of reality, the mere act of sitting on the loo and the denouement of having to scrape clean our derrières, ought to compel any rational thinker to conclude that any god delusion is something that humanity has pulled out of their malodorous orifices. And just as more often than not, all those mangled remains of creatures passing through our anuses result in damaging our orifices, so have the god fecal matter damaged the collective anus called humanity.
