A facebook friend of mine posted an article by the author of the study, who in his humility uses it as a reference to wail against the dangers of non-paleolithic diets and microwave ovens. I traced it as far as I could get, and it looks a bit... dubious to me. The author is a professor emeritus of surgery who started researching nutrition after his retirement. The journal is legitimate as far as I can tell.
- First, it looks like the background and the conclusions are basically the same. So it looks like he started by begging the question.
- Secondly, a non-quantitative metastudy of 13500 articles? This looks positively ripe for cherry picking.
- Thirdly, the result appears to be all over the place. He gets elaborate and alarming results both about the function of this "RAGE" and about its association to all but literally every chronic disease known to mankind, and also how to avoid it be eating right?
What do you think, people of JREF? What's the deal with these "Advanced glycation and lipoxidation end products" anyway?
