Denialism

I've long been amazed at the ability of many people to ignore facts which disagree with their worldview, whether it's religion, the age of the earth, whether the earth is flat and so on. It seems to be moving even further now, with the internet and social media squeezing people into their own echo-chambers where they disregard any inconvenient facts. Here's an interesting article from the Guardian which tries to explain it (it's a bit of a long read):

There's no doubt that this trend plays into the hands of populist, nationalist politicians such as Trump.

I wonder what can be done now? From the article:

Perhaps, if we can face up to the challenge presented by these new revelations, it might pave the way for a politics shorn of illusion and moral masquerade, where different visions of what it is to be human can openly contend. This might be a firmer foundation on which to rekindle some hope for human progress – based not on illusions of what we would like to be, but on an accounting of what we are.
