[Split Thread] Why do some cases attract so much more attention than others?

I have split this thread from the latest iteration of the Trials of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito series of threads, so that posters can address the question the OP poses.

But seriously, 26 threads in a row, seven and a half years, and tens of thousands of posts... all because of one wrong verdict somewhere in the world?

I don't get it. No other topic even comes close to this, and it is, essentially, irrelevant.

So why spend so much time on this?
