[Split Thread] Why do some cases attract so much more attention than others?

Mod Info I have split this thread from the latest iteration of the Trials of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito series of threads, so that posters can address the question the OP poses.

Mod Warning Please use this thread only to discuss the phenomenon of why some cases attract so much attention and others hardly any. Please do not to discuss the specifics of any particular case other than briefly if necessary to illustrate your answers to the OP question.

But seriously, 26 threads in a row, seven and a half years, and tens of thousands of posts... all because of one wrong verdict somewhere in the world?

I don't get it. No other topic even comes close to this, and it is, essentially, irrelevant.

So why spend so much time on this?
