The Titanic sank after it cruised at an unsafe speed through iceberg-cluttered waters on a nearly moonless night, and apparently the lookout didn't have binoculars because he didn't have the key to the locker where they were stored. Question: Did the ship use some kind of lighting? Even with the technology of the time, a tightly focused spotlight shining ahead from the bow might have given them time to act. If they didn't, why not?
