Cyber-Self Defense. What are the basic things one should know to protect oneself?

In a world that is becoming more and more dependent on computers and the internet, it is becoming crucial to be computer literate, and to have some basic protection skills against people who engage in hacking. What are some of the basic things one should know/learn to avoid becoming a victim of hacking?

Obviously, some of them would require no actual knowledge of computers at all. I can say at the top of my head, avoiding heated interactions in public cyber spaces such as chatrooms, where hackers are known to be found. It would be kind of the equivalent to avoiding low key bars in dangerous neighborhoods, where some people are known to carry weapons.

But what are some of the things one should learn in terms of the computer language/jargon, as well as computer software that would help to have a safer internet interaction generally?
