Could God give you bad rules

So I keep hearing that I can't be good without God telling me what to do, and that stuff like persecuting the gays is good because God said so in the OT. And God could never give a bad rule, right?

Now you know what _I_ think about God's existence or the morality of his rules, but let's hear it from God himself about the rules he gave in the OT. And bear in mind that this is not interpretation, or some theologian's opinion, or whatever, but supposed to be plain text from God himself. So, you know, you can't argue with the guy who actually gave those rules, when he talks about how good they are or why he gave them.

So, brothers and sisters, today we open the good book to Ezekiel, chapter 20, verses 25 and 26:

25. So I gave them other statutes that were not good and laws through which they could not live;

26. I defiled them through their gifts—the sacrifice of every firstborn—that I might fill them with horror so they would know that I am the Lord.’

Note that here he's not talking about the Egyptians or Canaanites or whatever. The whole page is about the Jews he brought from Egypt and who pissed off the Lord by making that idol in the desert.

So because they lusted for their old religious statutes, what does the Lord do? Why, give them other statutes which were not good and new laws through which they could not live.

What laws and statutes are we talking about? Oh, the OT.

And why would God give bad rules? Of course to terrorize them, so they know he's the real God. Obviously if he gave some good and sane rules, and was nice and caring to his people, they'd think, 'nah, that can't be a real god' ;)

So, to cut this short and return to the topic: could God give bad rules? Actually, he already did. He says so himself.
