"THese are not the handbags you are looking for..."

BBC News: Oprah Winfrey 'was victim of racism' in Switzerland

This seems an odd story. Oprah Winfrey walks into an "upmarket handbag shop in Zurich" and is told by an assistant that the merchandise is "too expensive" for her. She presumably doesn't play the "don't you know who I am?" card (good for her), and walks out.

The report draws attention to suggested indicators of xenophobia in Switzerland, but also points out that Winfrey's show is not shown in the country. Is this a case of Winfrey getting the cold-shoulder because she's black, or because she simply wasn't recognised as a rich person? I daresay than even at our best, most of us wouldn't pass muster in this sort of establishment, either.

ETA: This Swiss report states that the "lizard or alligator skin" bag Winfrey asked to see was kept behind a security screen, and has a price tag of 35,000 francs - around 25k Sterling or US$38k.
